The sedentary artist: How to stay active when your job requires long hours at a desk

Updated: Jan 24

As artists, we often find ourselves lost in the creative process, with hours slipping away as we sit at our desks. But as the famous philosopher Plato reminded us, "Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it." So, it's important to find ways to stay active, even when our jobs require us to be sedentary.

But how can we balance the demands of our art with the need for physical activity? Here are a few tips and tricks to help you maintain both a healthy body and a productive mind as an artist:

  1. Stand up and stretch: Take a break from your desk every hour or so to stand up and stretch. This simple act can improve circulation, reduce muscle tension, and give your brain a much-needed break.

  2. Invest in a standing desk: If you can, consider investing in a standing desk. This will allow you to work while standing, which can help reduce the negative effects of prolonged sitting. And as the philosopher Nietzsche said, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." So, embrace the challenge of a standing desk and let it help you build a stronger, healthier body.

  3. Walk and talk: If you have a phone meeting, take the call while walking around your neighborhood or local park. This will help you get some exercise while you work, and as the philosopher Confucius said, "It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop." So, even if you can only fit in a short walk, it's still better than nothing.

  4. Take breaks: Make sure to take breaks and step away from your desk. Go for a walk, do some stretches, or just stand up and stretch. As the philosopher Lao Tzu said, "Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished." So, take a cue from nature and allow yourself the time and space to rest and recharge.

  5. Find creative ways to be active while you work: There are plenty of ways to sneak in some physical activity while you work. Consider doing some simple desk exercises, such as leg lifts or chair squats. As the philosopher Aristotle said, "Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work." So, if you can find ways to enjoy physical activity, it will be easier to make it a regular part of your routine.

By incorporating these simple tips and tricks into your daily routine, you can stay active and healthy, even when your job requires long hours at a desk. Remember, as the philosopher Plato said, "Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it." So, take care of your body and you'll be able to approach your work with renewed energy and enthusiasm.

And as the philosopher Mark Twain said, "Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." So, don't let your age or your job hold you back from a fit and healthy body. Embrace the challenges and find creative ways to stay active, no matter what your circumstances. Happy creating!
