In this detailed guide, I will walk you through the step-by-step process of setting up RunPod for DreamBooth and configuring it specifically for Stable Diffusion. This tutorial is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of how to use GPU clouding of RunPod to fine-tune your Stable Diffusion models.

Before we get started with setup instructions, it's important to recognize the inherent challenges of AI and machine learning tasks, which can place a significant burden on your local computer's resources. For many individuals, access to the GPU power required for these tasks is limited, if not entirely absent. Furthermore, undertaking large-scale AI projects often demands an exceptional level of computational capability that surpasses what typical personal computers can offer.

RunPod is a cloud platform designed for AI and machine learning. It's a cost-effective alternative to high-end GPUs and ideal when your computer lacks the power needed for tasks like DreamBooth. With serverless GPU computing, RunPod offers quick startup, automatic scaling, and a secure environment, granting access to significant computational power without the need for specialized hardware. RunPod uses Docker technology to isolate tasks on a host machine and connects thousands of servers. This decentralized approach makes it an excellent choice for AI and machine learning, providing the necessary power and flexibility. We can utilize RunPod for AI tasks like DreamBooth, offloading intensive work to maintain our personal computer's performance while tapping into RunPod's substantial computing power for training.

Understanding Cloud Options & Template

Since RunPod operates as a cloud GPU server, you'll need to allocate your hours before you can start using it. Once you've completed the payment,


There are four key aspects to consider:

  1. The Community Cloud

  2. The Secure Cloud

  3. Templates

  4. Pods


1. Community Cloud: This option is suitable for users who don't handle sensitive data and are looking for cost-effective GPU resources. It leverages the strength of a community, providing access to peer-to-peer GPU computing via RunPod's decentralized platform. It's an economical choice with global diversity.

2. Secure Cloud: Secure Cloud is recommended for sensitive and business-related workloads. It ensures that your operations take place in a Tier 4 data center, featuring robust physical security and restricted access limited to authorized personnel.

Remember, more powerful GPUs come at a higher cost, so your choice should align with your specific requirements. Opting for faster and pricier GPUs can significantly expedite data training.

For running DreamBooth effectively, it's advisable to have a virtual machine with a minimum of 24GB of VRAM.

Recommended Minimum Requirement to run Dreambooth:

  • Any virtual machines that has 24gb of VRAM

GPU Configurations Available: Below, I've marked the GPUs with 24GB of VRAM or higher. Keep in mind that the availability of these cards may change over time. Therefore, it's important to reserve them for a duration that allows you to complete your training effectively. I normally choose secure cloud for security reasons, but you're free to opt-in for the community cloud if you prefer the more cost effect route.

3 Templates: In RunPod, templates serve as ready-made packages containing a Docker container image along with its configuration. You have the flexibility to decide how much customization you want to apply, depending on your skill level and specific needs. If you're aiming to fine-tune Stable Diffusion Models using DreamBooth, the simplest approach is to begin with a RunPod official template or a community template that suits your requirements without needing extensive customization. These templates are pre-configured and ready to use, making your setup process more straightforward.

4. Pods: The Pod tabs in RunPod serve as a convenient way to organize and manage your computing resources. They allow you to group and categorize your virtual machines, making it easier to keep track of various projects, tasks, or purposes. Whether you're working on multiple AI models, data processing, or different applications, Pod tabs help you maintain order and efficiency by providing a structured approach to managing your computing resources.

Note: You'll notice the availability of both Official and Community templates. You have the option to use either of them, but as a personal preference, I tend to lean towards the Official templates, unless there's a specific reason to opt for a Community template.

Make sure to select the latest version available.

In some of the templates, you may notice a "Read Me" button. Clicking on this button provides valuable information about the template, including details about its maintainer. For instance, in the case of "RunPod Fast Stable Diffusion," clicking "Read Me" reveals that it is maintained by the GitHub repository known as "TheLastBen." A quick online search of this name will direct you to the corresponding GitHub repository, where you can access additional details about this template.

The information typically includes general details and instructions on how to use the template. If you wish to explore further information about a specific template, you can follow this LINK.

Set-Up and Deploy GPU Cloud Computing

  1. Go to the Secure/Community Cloud option.

  2. Choose your GPU. Opt for more RAM if you prefer faster processing. For simplicity, I'll select the 4090 GPU, but I recommend conducting your own research to find the GPU that best balances performance and cost for your needs.

  3. Select "On-Demand (Non-Interruptible)" as this is ideal for training tasks where interruptions are unwanted.

  4. On the right, pick your template. In our case, we're using "RunPod Fast Stable Diffusion."

  5. Ensure that "Start Jupyter Notebook" is enabled. When you deploy, it should enable you to connect to a Jupyter Lab session.

  6. Before proceeding, you can customize your deployment by clicking on the button to the left. This allows you to adjust settings like Container Disk and Volume Disk. Consider your need for persistent disk space; if you plan to generate and retain a significant amount of data, increase the volume disk accordingly. However, it's advisable to start with default settings if you're uncertain about your data requirements.

  7. Click "Deploy." This action initializes your machine. Once completed, you'll find a list of Pods under the "Manage" section, specifically labeled as "Pods."

  1. After setup, you'll find yourself in the "Pods" section, under the "Manage" tab. Here, you can see all the Pods you've used before and revisit them at any time. For newcomers, you'll initially see the Pod you just created for "RunPod Fast Stable Diffusion."

  2. Click on "Connect."

  3. A menu will appear, and you should choose "Connect to Jupyter Lab."

  4. This action opens a new browser tab, creating a workspace.

  5. Within this workspace, select the "RNPD-Dreambooth-v1.ipynb" notebook.

We'll use this notebook for executing DreamBooth and accessing the Stable Diffusion WebUI, allowing you to test your finely-tuned model.
